Companion Piece: Eye In The Skye

I started ‘Into the Light’ during Ontario’s 1st Covid lockdown in March 2020. Initially, the painting was dark, moody and quite frankly, somewhat depressing. It bothered me. Then I took a break from this piece to consider all of the ups and downs of self-isolation. I decided not to fear the future, but to respect the situation and face it head on. Seeking the lighter side of things instead of the darker side. Am I worried? You betcha. Am I afraid? No way. ‘Into the Light’ reflects this surreal experience.

DIFFERENT, YET THE SAME!
Unframed: 18”hx18”; Black Floating Frame:  19” x 19”

Each culture is different, yet individuals’ underlying needs are the same. Food, shelter, clothing. The design of each flower is deliberately unique and non-specific and represents different cultures. The same colours are used in each flower to reflect the universal similarities and delightful differences of all people. We are each Different, Yet the Same!

Chinese Brush Painting AND SUMI-E

I C E B E R G A L L E Y
Chinese Ink on Washi (Japanese Paper)
Unframed: 22”h x 32”w; Framed: 28”h x 38”w; Black Frame

This painting is about capturing the essence of Fogo Island, Newfoundland using Chinese inks on Japanese paper (washi).  In keeping with the traditions of this art form, the lighthouse leaves the paper.   There is a majesty in the night, watching the stars, the aurora borealis dance, and the merging of manmade structures and nature at its finest.  This painting won an Award from the 11th Annual Juried ICCPS show, Tokyo, Japan (2022).

Chinese Ink on Rice Paper
Unframed: 22 1/2”h x 22 1/2”w; Grey Frame

'Spiritual Woods' was created through my imagination and memories of travelling throughout western Canada.  The intent was to capture the essence of Canada's wilderness depicting that it is a mysterious life form unto itself.   There is a spirit within the air that permeates the wilderness.  The painting is of a breathing forest and Canadian wildlife, while inferring that humans (campers) were nearby).    The camper's fire pit is properly contained, which is integral to retaining the forest in its current state. This painting won an Award of Merit for 10th Annual Juried ICCPS show, Tokyo, Japan (2021). Due to the Covid lockdown the show was converted from in-person to on-line for the first time in the show’s 10 year history. Laura was 1 of 3 North American artists to win an award at this prestigious show.

This painting is a companion to Qi of Water. It represents that all life, and lifestyles, is dependent on water. This painting is from the artist's imagination and although it is a 'zen' painting, the lighthouse hints of the need to be respectful of the elements. In this case, the element of water.

Toronto Island View was painted while going down memory lane. As child, I loved Centreville and life on the islands. Most of all, I wanted to be on any the sail boats I saw between the island and the city.
